A night of fear descended upon residents of a Marina del Rey apartment complex as a gunman engaged in an hours-long shooting spree from the building's rooftop late Saturday night. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department confirmed that deputies responded to a call about gunshots within the 4100 block of Via Marina at approximately 10:15 p.m. A male suspect was reportedly firing rounds from a rifle, prompting a significant law enforcement response, including the mobilization of SWAT teams and the deployment of four Bearcat vehicles, as reported by the LASD - Los Angeles County Sheriffs Dept Information Bureau.
According to KTLA, recounting how they were forced to quickly shelter in place — some for up to three hours. Elizabeth Amos and her husband, Jeff Rubin, residents of Pearl Apartments, had to hastily seek refuge in their bathroom during the ordeal. "We were like, 'What is that?' and then we heard the gunman by the pool saying something along the lines of, 'I have an AR-15 and nobody cares,' and we were like, 'Oh my gosh,'" Amos recounted. During the harrowing wait, Rubin described periods of eerie silence punctuated by further gunfire.
The suspect was eventually taken into custody around 1 a.m., with no further incident reported. An aerial unit of the LASD had initially located the suspect on the roof, leading to the assembled arrest team's approach. The public was advised to come forward with any information as deputies continued to canvass for evidence, witnesses, and potential victims. However, according to law enforcement officials, no victims were found on site, as per KTLA.
Residents grappling with the aftermath expressed disbelief at the identity of the gunman, describing him as a familiar face from the complex. "Once we found out who it was, we realized that we knew the guy," told Amos to KTLA. "We've seen him a million times before. He was nice, normal, quiet, didn't think once that he was anyone to worry about." A LASD photograph reportedly shows the weapons left behind by the man, including what appears to be two rifles, a handgun, and some tactical gear. Rubin expressed his surprise, saying, "If you tell me now that no one got hurt from all this, it’s hard to believe." The identity of the suspect has not been released by authorities as of yet.
