Amidst the buzzing anticipation for Fiesta and following a spectacular eclipse, San Antonio's Plaza Guadalupe played host to an enchanting evening of traditional tunes on Friday—the 8th annual Noche de Romance. The event, heralded by the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, brought together a crowd spanning various generations to revel in the nostalgic strains of mariachi music under a benevolent waxing moon. The evening's star attraction, Mariachi Azteca de América, serenaded attendees from 8 to 10 p.m. with a repertoire of beloved Mexican love songs, as reported by the San Antonio Report.
Gino Rivera, the traditional music director of the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center and bandleader of Mariachi Azteca de América, described the diverse crowd and their unified appreciation for mariachi, a style that "really unite," Rivera explained that the performance would not only showcase traditional mariachi music, but also "virtuoso pieces" and evoke "the nostalgia of these traditional songs and artists," according to the San Antonio Report. Young students from McAuliffe Middle School, Harris Middle School, and Jay High School also graced the stage, guided by instructors Miguel Angel Ibarra and Eric Jorge Garcia, their presence highlighting the continuity of mariachi through the ages.
The event, more than just a musical offering, also serves as a fundraiser for the mariachi education programs at the Guadalupe Center. Rivera sees it as an invaluable opportunity for students, putting them alongside "world-renowned vocalists" to help them envision their potential futures in music. Sharing the limelight were talents such as 9-year-old Mateo Lopez, Jonathan Palomar, formerly of Mariachi Vargas, and Rhonda Garcia, a seasoned mariachi performer and instructor, the latter of whom has graced all but one Noche de Romance with her presence, as highlighted in the San Antonio Report.
At the heart of it all was the uniting power of mariachi, weaving a tapestry of communal harmony as described by Rhonda Garcia, “Mariachi transcends all boundaries, so it’s a night where everyone comes together; it’s a night of familia, of family connection.” Garcia recounted to the San Antonio Report how performing for an audience of varied ages, looking into the crowd to see the joyful faces from teenagers to octogenarians, truly "fills my heart." To accommodate the mariachi aficionados, the plaza made room for 500 patrons, offering tickets at various echelons of experience, from general standing to VIP seating available through the Guadalupe Center website.
To experience the fusion of cultural admiration and budding talent, the previous Noche de Romance painted a similar picture of musical indulgence, featuring the same headliners Mariachi Azteca de América. They performed time-honored hits from icons like Jose Alfredo Jimenez, Juan Gabriel, and Agustin Lara, embracing the poetic that echoes throughout Plaza Guadalupe on such nights, an occasion richly detailed by the event's listing on GetCreativeSanAntonio.com.
