Tragedy struck off the coast of Tijuana this Tuesday as the body of a San Diego man, reported missing after a family outing turned deadly, was discovered by search teams and authorities. 27-year-old Víctor Oswaldo Villarreal Garcia set out last Friday to enjoy Spring Break by swimming back to his rented sailboat but never completed the journey. The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that despite the approaching storm and high tide conditions, the determined swimmer, an athlete versed in surfing and swimming, attempted to brave the choppy seas.
Officials stated that when Villarreal Garcia's dinghy malfunctioned, he decided to swim to the sailboat moored off the coast. The Tijuana Fire Department's water rescue division chief Juan Hernández described the sea state as rough, with the area on high alert due to an incoming storm. In a twist of fate, detailed by NBC San Diego, fishermen witnessed Villarreal Garcia close to reaching his destination before he vanished.
The exhaustive three-day search involving Tijuana and Rosarito fire departments, Civil Protection, the State Prosecutor's Office, the Mexican Navy, and approximately 20 volunteers was captured by local media and volunteers' cameras, as his family requested additional support through social media and put forth drones and jet skis to help on both sides of the border. Then, on Tuesday afternoon, amidst the orchestrated search efforts, his body was found, his identity confirmed by the distinct tattoos recognized by a family member, as reported by The San Diego Union-Tribune.
While an autopsy is pending to determine the exact cause of death, preliminary indications suggest drowning. Tijuana's regional prosecutor, Rubén Ramos Jiménez, confirmed the body's recovery location as Punta Bandera. Sharing his grief, Congressman Sammy Peña, Villarreal Garcia's uncle, expressed his gratitude towards everyone involved in the search for his nephew, describing him as "a nice kid" to The San Diego Union-Tribune.
