A Santa Monica beachgoer's day in the sun took a harrowing turn when a lifeguard was threatened by a homeless man brandishing a metallic rod, officials said. In a tumultuous incident that unfolded over the weekend, police officers responded to the beachfront after reports of 38-year-old Michael Vincent Parrett attacking a lifeguard. The confrontation occurred at approximately 11:00 am on April 8, according to the City of Santa Monica.
A jump from the Lifeguard Tower 12 preceded the assault, as Parrett approached the lifeguard and made several aggressive thrusts with the rod. The quick-moving victim dodged injury and alerted the authorities. As per the City of Santa Monica, Parrett fled the scene, waving the rod at bystanders before leading officers on a chase to the bluffs above Pacific Coast Highway, prompting a temporary closure of the thoroughfare in both directions to avert potential traffic peril.
CHP officers joined the Santa Monica Police in mitigating the ensuing chaos, stepping in to safely direct vehicles away from the area while negotiations with the suspect ensued. Parrett reportedly taunted officers with threats of resistance, claiming he wouldn't surrender without resorting to violence. "He continued to maintain control of the weapon, refusing to drop it," authorities said.
A K9 unit was eventually called to the scene to subdue Parrett after non-lethal tactics failed to secure the rod. Following his arrest, the suspect was transported to a local hospital for evaluation before being booked into Santa Monica Jail. He faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to inflict great bodily injury, as reported by the City of Santa Monica.
