Seattle Named Finalist for Prestigious 2024 All-America City AwardSource: Seattle Government Website

Seattle has scored a spot as one of the top 20 contenders for the national honor of being named an All-America City. The distinction, handed out by the National Civic League, shines a spotlight on the city’s efforts to strengthen democracy through hands-on innovation and community action, as reported by the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods.

"We can and must strengthen our democracy so that it is resilient in the face of challenges and better serves all Americans," said Doug Linkhart, President of the National Civic League, according to the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods. The nod from the league comes as a feather in the cap for Seattle, which has been actively working to engage the community in governance. The finalists this year were particularly chosen for their ability to effectively make local changes and innovate governance, rather than wait for federal mandates.

The All-America City Award, now in its 75th year, celebrates those communities that have gone above and beyond in engaging their citizens. According to the League, Seattle has been lauded for its commitment to inclusiveness, equity, and civic engagement. This recognition sets the stage for Seattle to share its local accomplishments on a national level.

We are honored to be recognized as a finalist for the All-America City Award," said Jenifer Chao, Director of the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods. Highlighting the city’s collective progress under Mayor Harrell's vision of 'One Seattle', Chao emphasized that the nomination stands as a testament to Seattle’s sense of community strength and its resilient endeavor to make the city a welcoming place for its residents, as stated by the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods.

Seattle, along with the other finalists, will have to present their achievements to a jury of civic leaders come June 7-9 in Denver, CO. The event promises to be a hub of workshops and networking opportunities. Additionally, the Department of Neighborhoods will be hosting a local watch party for Seattle residents eager to support the city during the final announcements.
