Suburban Detroit Mother Arrested for Alleged Drunk Driving, Accused of Abandoning Children in Troy HotelSource: Google Street View

A suburban Detroit mother found herself in handcuffs after police say she left three children abandoned in a hotel lobby and then was stopped on suspicion of drunk driving while she maneuvered her SUV down a city thoroughfare. The incident unfolded just after the witching hour on Saturday in Troy, Michigan.

Officers responded to a call from the Marriott Hotel at 200 W. Big Beaver Road, where security staff discovered the kiddos without their parent. The children, having spent time earlier at Kona Grill with their mother, confided in police they felt their mother was too soused to ensure a safe drive back to their lodging, according to The Detroit News.

The tale took a turn when the mother left the children in the hotel to ostensibly smoke outside and failed to return, prompting the young ones to raise the alarm with hotel employees, CBS News Detroit reported. Staff from the nearby Kona Grill, which is less than a mile from the hotel, had already expressed their concern for the children's well-being to the authorities, citing the mother's apparent intoxication.

A subsequent search led to Troy officers finding a 44-year-old Southfield woman driving her 2017 Buick SUV in a wobbly westbound trek near Livernois Road. During the traffic stop, they observed the telltale signs of her inebriation: slurred words, bloodshot eyes, and a rocky stance once she exited the vehicle. Despite failing multiple field sobriety tests, she flatly refused a breathalyzer test, "Police arrested her on suspicion of drunk driving and placed her in the Troy Jail," Patch disclosed.

Her resistance continued at the police lock-up as she declined the test again, which led officers to obtain a warrant for a blood draw. The results, which are pending, may dictate the nature of the charges she will face. Troy Police have passed the baton to detectives as the matter remains under investigation.
