Houston saw tragedy unfold on Martin Luther King Boulevard yesterday when a motorcycle rider was struck and killed in a hit-and-run. Police have now cuffed a suspect, Ravven Kayon Lewis, 32, and slapped her with a charge for leaving the scene of a fatality. A mugshot of the accused has been circulated, but the victim's name awaits confirmation pending a formal identification process.
The chaotic scene was laid out near 8000 MLK Boulevard at around 10 a.m., where a silver Cadillac SRX, driven, police say, by Lewis, was making a left but careened into a motorcycle heading opposite. The collision left the male biker dead as the car's occupants bailed, fleeing on foot before the eyes of the stunned public. Despite the loss and the escape, Lewis later turned herself in to authorities, according to official Houston Police Department statements.
First responders from Houston Fire Department arrived at the crash site only to declare the motorcyclist deceased. An investigation by HPD Vehicular Crimes Division's Sergeant L. Ross and Officer M. Matthews is open, aiming to piece together the events that led to this deadly encounter. In the interim, Lewis faces justice with charges of Failure to Stop and Render Aid Involving Death, as noted by the 182nd State District Court.
After the incident, the suspect, believed to go by both Lewis and Kayon, showed up at a police station to give her account of the incident. Her surrender and statement have led to her confinement in the Harris County Jail.
