A suspected drunk driver was nabbed by the law after causing a car crash in Harris County earlier this week. Deputies from Constable Mark Herman's Office were called to a scene of a collision on Spring Stuebner Road, where they encountered Russell Alvis, the man accused of triggering the pileup.
The constables reported that upon arrival, Alvis exhibited several signs of being intoxicated. Field tests were conducted right there on the tarmac which, according to the officers, confirmed that Alvis was driving under the influence of alcohol.
"Russell Alvis was arrested and booked into the Harris County Jail charged with Driving While Intoxicated. His bond was set at $100.00 out of County Court 6," Constable Mark Herman said in a statement. The incident and subsequent arrest occurred on April 5, but details were made public just a couple of days later.
This case throws a harsh spotlight yet again on the county's ongoing battles with drunk driving, an issue that has haunted the roadways with their share of tragedies and close calls. Concerns over the low bond amount have also stirred discussion among the public; a bond that for some, might seem like a slap on the wrist rather than a deterrent for a potential life-threatening behavior. The outcome of Alvis' case remains to be seen as the justice system takes its course.
