In a late-night display of mayhem on the 101 Freeway in Camarillo, a wrong-way driver under the influence set off an 11-vehicle pileup. Luis Ocampo Cardoso, 24, of Santa Barbara, has been identified as the suspect after his 2008 Honda Civic collided head-on with other vehicles near Camarillo Springs Road. This information comes via NBC Los Angeles, which reported that the chaotic incident started around midnight and included Cardoso's Honda slamming into another car.
The aftermath was disastrous, with several people sustaining injuries. According to NBC Los Angeles, the crash quickly evolved as nine additional vehicles were caught in the fray. The CHP, responding to what was first reported as a wrong-way driver, found that alcohol was a major factor in the crash. Cardoso was then arrested to primarily suspect DUI as the cause.
Victims were rushed to Los Robles Hospital with various injuries. The extent of this calamity left the first struck vehicle, a 2016 Honda Civic, severely damaged and its driver requiring extraction before hospitalization, detailed by KTLA. The entire northbound section of the freeway near the crash site was subsequently closed for hours during the investigation.
Authorities are trying to piece together how Cardoso managed to drive the wrong way on the freeway and the precise point of entry. "The incident led to the temporary closure of the thoroughfare," as per CBS News Los Angeles. The crash's impact on early Sunday morning traffic was significant, leaving commuters scrambling for alternate routes as CHP officers worked diligently to unravel the sequence of events and clear the scene. Anyone with information about the accident is encouraged to reach out to the CHP's Moorpark Office at 805-553-0800.
