A man has been taken into custody following a deadly shooting inside a Philadelphia apartment, which claimed the life of an 18-year-old, authorities said. The incident unfolded late Tuesday night in the Roxborough section at the Henry on the Park apartment complex, as reported by 6abc. The suspect, a 23-year-old male, was found by the responding officers still in possession of the gun, outside of the building.
According to the details shared by the police, the victim was transported to the hospital in a private car around 10:30 p.m., where he succumbed to his injuries. The 23-year-old alleged shooter had jumped from the fourth-floor window of the apartment, post the shooting, said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small, in a statement obtained by NBC Philadelphia. Remarkably, the man was not injured from the fall and cooperated with police upon their arrival.
Investigations by the officials indicated that the fatal gunshot, evidence of which was found in the living room, was a result of a domestic dispute. It was noted that during the fight, family members of the woman involved and several friends appeared at the scene to intervene. "That's when one shot was fired," Small relayed to NBC Philadelphia. Police continued their work through the night, interviewing multiple witnesses to piece together the chronology of events that led to the teenager's death.
Philadelphia's homicide rates have seen a sharp decrease in recent months. Entering Wednesday, the number of homicides reported in the city stands at 98 for the year, down about 38% from the same date last year and marking the lowest year-to-date total since 2015, as per police data, police say. The investigation into the Roxborough incident remains ongoing as law enforcement agencies delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
