Memorial Day is a time of remembrance and honor, and the Anoka County Veterans Council is making sure our heroes aren't forgotten. This year, they're pulling out all the stops with services recognizing those who've served our country across myriad conflicts – from the World Wars to the battles in the Middle East.
The day kicks off on May 25 with an early 10 am ceremony at the Morningside Memorial Gardens' Field of Honor in Coon Rapids. And following the first tribute, there'll be another service at 11:30 am, this one at the Bunker Hills Activity Center in Andover. Mark Manley, the council historian, will be there to greet attendees.
According to a statement on Anoka County's official website, the invitation is a broad call to arms – letting community members and their families join veterans to reflect on and honor the sacrifices made for the nation. The services will feature representation from several veterans' groups, including the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legions, and Iraq, Iran, and Afghanistan Veterans, among others.
After the solemn salutes, the council turns up the heat on the celebration with a family/community picnic. Scheduled right after the ceremony and held at the Bunker Hills Activity Center, it's poised to unite the community, vets, and their families in a more relaxed setting – right where they left off from the service.
