With the advent of spring, the City of Apple Valley has issued a public service announcement urging residents to be conscious of potential drainage issues on their property.

As the snow melts and spring rains begin, homeowners are advised to create a gentle slope away from their structures to facilitate water runoff and city officials underscored the importance of adhering to proper drainage plans to prevent soil erosion and water accumulation, although they also emphasized the need for properties to have proper grading in order to efficiently channel water away from buildings, these measures can go a long way in preventing any potential water damage.

According to the city's alert, every property has been designed with specific drainage considerations in mind, typically directing water toward side and rear property lines, and away from structures. The area, which oftentimes includes a drainage and utility easement, should be clear of any obstructions that may impede the natural flow of water.

The city also recommends the installation of downspouts and, if necessary, extensions to channel meltwater from roofs and gutters safely away from the property, this can be a cost-effective way to manage water runoff, but it is essential that residents ensure these structures do not direct water onto public streets, sidewalks, or neighboring lots.
