The Solid Waste Department is changing things up for Memorial Day. So before you head out to your barbecues and remembrances, be sure you know when to drag your bins to the curb. There won't be any compost, garbage, recycling, or leaf & limb collections on Monday, May 27, 2024, Athenians will want to mark their calendars for a shake-up in their waste collection schedule due to the holiday.
If your home or business isn't in the downtown area and you're a customer of ACC Solid Waste, you're looking at a delay. All collections typically scheduled for Monday will shift to Tuesday, and the pattern continues down the line with Friday tackling both its own load and Thursday's overflow, according to an announcement from the department. Normal service won't be resuming until the following Monday, June 3, 2024, so plan accordingly.
However, if you're living or operating within the beating heart of Athens, the Downtown District, don't fret about changes. The city announcement confirms Downtown's pickups will roll on as scheduled, with no interruptions. Remember, wherever you are, to have those roll-carts out at the curb by the crack of dawn—or at least by 7:00 AM on your collection day. Don't be the neighbor with trash piling up because you missed the memo!
While Memorial Day is a time for reflection and gratitude towards those who served, it also tends to disrupt schedules. So, ACC Solid Waste customers, remember: temporary changes happen, but getting a citation for late bins could spoil the holiday. Keep streets clean—it's the least we owe to our surroundings and the service members we honor on this day.
