In an unexpected twist of events, a savvy employee at Austin's Bazaarvoice outsmarted a scammer who tried to con her into purchasing gift cards, as reported by KVUE. Kaylin Balderrama recognized the fraudulent attempt when she received a text message from someone posing as her company's CEO with an urgent request for gift cards.
While the scammer expected compliance, they got tricked instead when Balderrama played along, even making bold requests of her own. "Can I have a raise and a promotion? And can I go to France next month and film TikToks for our company?" she asked the scammer, who obliviously promised a raise KVUE reported. This modern-day internet hero didn't just end the encounter there, she made a TikTok of it, and it went viral enough to catch her real CEO's attention – a move that eventually won her a trip to France on the company's dime.
Yet, not all Texans have been as fortunate in dodging scams. Just a few weeks prior, in a separate ordeal detailed by KXAN, a Georgetown woman was swindled out of $300,000. Feds have charged Moinuddin Mohammed with being part of a wider fraudulent operation that tricked elderly individuals into buying gold online and handing it over to conspirators.
The suspect didn't just stop in Georgetown; court documents reveal similar scams totaling over $850,000 in losses across Texas, with links to other states. Mohammed is now looking at three major counts against him: Conspiracy to Commit Wire Fraud, Conspiracy to Commit Money Laundering, and making false statements to FBI agents. "On more than one occasion, and at the direction of and in coordination with one or more coconspirators, [Mohammed] received gold and cash from the victims of the fraud scheme, conveyed a portion of the proceeds to his coconspirators, and kept a percentage of the proceeds for his own benefit," stated the court documents.
In a digital age where scam attempts are omnipresent, the contrasting outcomes of these two cases serve as a stark reminder that vigilance and a hint of skepticism could make the difference between a free trip to France or a devastating loss. From the witty retorts of a social media manager to the cunning ploys of a fraud ring, the battleground of internet deceit is clearly a place where one must tread carefully.
