Austin's long-awaited Zilker Eagle mini train is experiencing yet another delay, pushing back its highly anticipated re-launch. The latest hiccup involves clearance issues identified during a recent full-load staff test, which sent the train coaches back to Schertz for modifications. Despite the setback, the Austin Parks Foundation remains optimistic, ensuring the public that safety is their priority. "While this was disappointing, it’s also exactly why we test!" a representative for the foundation explained in an email obtained by KXAN.
The train, destined to replace the Zilker Zephyr which ceased operation in early 2020, experienced a storm-related track erosion that had left Zilker Park trainless since May 2019. A new tentative launch date is on the horizon, however, as the foundation outlines plans to adjust the coaches with stronger springs and life trucks, to resolve the clearance issues. After the modifications, the train is slated to undergo additional testing back at the park. This information was corroborated by a foundation spokesperson in a statement reported by KXAN.
The new train system, which bears the nostalgic name of the park's original 1961 locomotive, comes after significant effort to address the erosion issues. Austin Parks Foundation CEO Colin Wallis shared with KVUE, "We know this project has been a bit of a rollercoaster ride, but we appreciate you hanging on with us, and we are so excited to be approaching what feels like the final stretch."
The persistent delays since early this year have not dampened the parks foundation's enthusiasm. Once the first three coaches receive their new components, trials can resume. If successful, Austin residents and visitors may soon have an opening date to circle on their calendars. "As soon as we get the word that the train can open, we'll share the good news with you along with details about when you can come out to take your first ride," Wallis told KVUE.
