Berkeley's boys in blue cracked down on impaired drivers at a recent sobriety checkpoint, snagging 17 drivers without a valid license and cuffing one with a DUI warrant, police said.
Drivers on Ashby Ave. at San Pablo Ave. were put to the test by the Berkeley Police Department on May 24, and out of 901 motorists stopped, officers didn't just issue citations for license violations. They also arrested an individual wanted for DUI, while another 19 got off with a DUI evaluation and no charges.
The checkpoint, part of a strategy to reduce alcohol-related crashes, targets areas with a history of such incidents. "DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on reported incidents of impaired driving-related crashes," Berkeley Police said in a statement.
Next month, on June 28, the checkpoint reruns. These operations are bankrolled by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety via the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration—the same setup as the latest checkpoint was funded, all designed to make our streets safer.
