In recognition of National Police Week and Peace Officers Memorial Day, the Bloomington Police Department will hold an early morning flag ceremony tomorrow at Civic Plaza. The ceremony, set for 8 a.m., seeks to pay homage to police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty and give thanks to those who continue to protect the community around the clock, according to the Bloomington Police Department, MN.

The department will also be present at the MN Law Enforcement Memorial Association's Remembrance Ceremony, which is to take place at 7 p.m. in St. Paul. This day of remembrance comes in light of sobering statistics, highlighting the risks law enforcement officers face daily. The Bloomington Police Department shared that a staggering 56,034 officers were assaulted, in 2019, 17,188 of which suffered injuries.

Tracing a grim history back to 1786, the total number of U.S. law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty surpasses 24,000. And despite advancements in technology and tactics designed to keep officers safe, 136 law enforcement officers lost their lives last year alone.
