A tragic fire consumed a Mesa home Wednesday evening, with the aftermath revealing a grim discovery as firefighters combing through the debris located the body of an adult male. The fire occurred around 5:30 p.m. near Gilbert Road and 8th Avenue according to FOX 10 Phoenix, dispatching firefighters to the scene where they managed to prevent the blaze from spreading to neighboring structures, they however, could not account for a resident initially reported as missing.
Mesa Police confirmed the discovery of the body two days later, though they have not officially released the identity of the deceased, a neighbor has reportedly identified him as Richard Daniels, in a statement given to FOX 10 Phoenix. Detective Brandi Myers relayed that the "cause and manner of death are pending and the origin and cause of the fire is still under investigation."
The emotional toll of such events was palpable when Amy Perille, Daniel's former girlfriend, expressed her grief to FOX 10 Phoenix. She described Daniels as a kindhearted individual with aspirations that belied his age, "It was 80s metal guy, still was trying to be in a band and make it big," she recalled. He adorned the home with large TVs and movie box sets, even though he resided there alone.
The neighborhood, shaken by the incident, watched helplessly as smoke billowed into the sky, a dreadful signifier that life and dreams were being reduced to ashes as neighboring resident Robert Tanner noted the smoke "probably went up roughly higher, but it’s roughly the height of the pole there," he said in an interview with FOX 10 Phoenix. For Perille, it’s a painful echo of loss; she lamented about a past boyfriend she lost to cirrhosis, "I kind of feel like a black widow and also kind of blame it myself because he lived in California, and he moved out here for me, so if I didn’t meet him, he might still be alive," she conveyed to FOX 10 Phoenix, sharing that Daniels was found on the bed of the master bedroom.
Investigators from both the fire department and the Mesa Police Department are jointly examining the cause of the fire, as the community grapples with the loss and the search for answers persists, the incident report from 12 News indicates the house fire was escalated to a first alarm fire, indicating the gravity of the blaze and the rapid response it necessitated. The medical examiner's preliminary assessment suggests the individual was an adult man, with further details pending as the investigation continues.
