The City of Boerne has once again planted its roots into the title of Tree City USA, marking its 13th consecutive year of being recognized for exceptional urban forestry management. Mayor Frank Ritchie expressed the city's dedication to nurturing this green legacy, "Being named a 2023 Tree City USA is a testament to Boerne's ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainability," according to a city statement.
The Arbor Day Foundation, which bestows the honor, commended Boerne for its efforts in upholding standards such as maintaining a tree board or department, establishing a tree care ordinance, and investing a minimum of $2 per capita towards community forestry. In addition, the city has been active in hosting an Arbor Day observance, a feat that has not gone unnoticed by the foundation's chief executive Dan Lambe, who told the city, "Tree City USA communities see the positive effects of an urban forest firsthand." Despite this recognition, officials acknowledge, there is always more work to be done in this critical, aspect of urban planning.
Lissette Jimenez, Boerne's Parks and Recreation Director, relayed the city's long-term vision in bolstering natural habitats, "This recognition aligns with our goals of preserving and enhancing our natural resources for current and future generations.” Furthermore, local residents and visitors alike seem to resonate with these environmental strides as they relish in the improvements trees bring to public spaces.
Since 2010, Boerne's commitment to expanding its canopy has resulted in the planting of over 1,850 trees. The Arbor Day Foundation, established in 1972 has been an advocate for global reforestation efforts, planting nearly 500 million trees worldwide. Boerne proudly stands among the 3,600 communities across the nation that have shown a steadfast commitment to urban forestry in 2023. This sustained effort not only highlights the city's dedication to environmental stewardship, but also cements its legacy, as a community that values the role of nature in the heart of its development.
