Residents of northern neighborhoods can soon breathe a little easier with the end of the major utility overhaul inching closer. NPL, a contractor authorized by CenterPoint Energy, is on track to wrap up their natural gas line replacements by early June, ensuring a smoother and safer delivery of energy services. This week, they expect to officially complete the service line and meter installations on Comstock Lane N. and 30th Avenue N., with work ongoing along Black Oaks Lane N. and several other residential streets.

CenterPoint Energy's transformative project has seen the transition of meters from inside homes to the outside, an effort that necessitates carefully scheduled appointments with residents to smoothly reconnect service lines to the newly laid mains. As workers steadily move to finish the remaining tasks, including the handling of surfaces disrupted during the construction, it's crucial for the locals to temporarily maintain utility flags in their yards. These flags are pivotal, serving as markers for existing underground utility lines ranging from cable to sewer systems. Without these indicators, crews would have to again reach out to Gopher State One Call to reflag the areas, potentially delaying the already intricate process.

"We thank you for your patience and apologize for the inconvenience as we're upgrading our infrastructure," a CenterPoint Energy bulletin announced. The company has stressed the importance of the construction pause for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, with no work scheduled for Friday, May 24, or Monday, May 27, to observe the holiday.

Restorative efforts are set to be conducted by Q3 Contracting, another contractor green-lighted by CenterPoint Energy, and they are slated to return the disturbed hard surfaces — think concrete and asphalt — back to their original state. Soft areas, such as the grassy zones and boulevards, will be revitalized with soil, seed, and biodegradable netting. These enhancements are expected to begin soon after NPL completes their segment of the project.
