A Sunday scramble near Balboa Park ended with a child, three adults, and a dog getting injured after a multi-car smash-up, according to San Diego's finest. The FOX 5 report indicated a speeding car lost control and rammed into several other vehicles parked along Balboa Drive and El Prado at nearly 11 a.m., prompting emergency services to race to the scene.
Witnesses describe the collision as a chaos where one of the vehicles lunged into a grassy spot, where park visitors were spread out, the speeding car almost hit them but luckily no one on the lawn was injured; the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) attributed sheer luck to the fact that, apart from those in the vehicles, no bystanders suffered harm. The child victim received immediate attention and was whisked off to Rady Children's Hospital in a precautionary move, while a driver was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital to tend to what were described as non-life-threatening injuries.
The other two adult victims are believed to have suffered minor wounds, though it remains to be confirmed if they were seen at medical facilities for their injuries. SDPD Lieutenant Arturo Swadener highlighted the fortunate circumstances, saying, "We’re very fortunate that more people weren’t injured," according to the statement from FOX 5/KUSI. Meanwhile, San Diego Fire Department (SDFD), who were on the ground with 34 personnel and a host of units including a truck, a medical supervisor, and others, appreciated the support provided by the City of Coronado in handling the incident.
As it stands, no fatalities have been reported, however, casualties involved were transported to various hospitals with medical code 10, indicating emergency transportation, per information provided by the SDFD incident report. A Toyota Camry was identified as the prime offending vehicle in the collision that included two other vehicles, this nugget of information was shared by the local KGTV outlet, which also noted that the SDPD Watch Commander disclosed no serious injuries had been sustained by those involved, though the investigation into the precise cause of the accident is still ongoing.
