Officials announced that Chula Vista is gearing up to combat impaired driving with a DUI checkpoint slated for May 18. The Chula Vista Police Department will operate the checkpoint from 6:00 PM to midnight, but the location within the city boundaries remains under wraps, as confirmed by a recent press release from the department.
Strategically chosen based on areas with a history of DUI-related accidents, the checkpoint aims to deter impaired drivers from taking to the streets and thus ensure a safer community.
The Chula Vista Police urged the public to consider not just alcohol but also prescription and over-the-counter drugs, along with marijuana—which, despite its legal status, remains illegal to use while driving—when assessing their fitness to drive. The price for neglecting these warnings is steep, with first-time DUI offenders facing over $13,500 in fines and a suspended license.
This safety initiative comes with the financial backing of the California Office of Traffic Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, reflecting a broader push to eradicate the perennial threat of impaired driving from our roads. The expense of these efforts was worn as a badge of commitment rather than a burden, and Agent Carter emphasized the potentially lifesaving impacts of such endeavors.
