Residents of Dallas-Fort Worth should brace for scorching temperatures and an air quality issue this week. According to the National Weather Service, mercury is set to soar with highs peaking around 92 degrees today and possibly hitting 93 by next Saturday. The heat index could make it feel as hot as 98 degrees with gusts of wind reaching up to 30 mph on certain days.
Amid the heat wave, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has alerted the area to an Ozone Action Day, recommending residents reduce pollution. High levels of ozone are expected today and sharing a ride or walking instead of driving are ways to help prevent an increase in ozone levels, the advisory noted. Taking lunch to work, conserving energy, and maintaining vehicles are also suggested actions, as per the National Weather Service.
While the week gets underway with consistent sunshine, the forecast throws a curveball by Wednesday, offering a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon, with higher probabilities of precipitation extending into Thursday night. This shift to slightly cooler temperatures and expected rainfall could provide a brief respite from the sweltering heat and may offer a momentary improvement in air quality.
The forecast doesn't promise much relief at night with low temperatures hovering in the 70s, suggesting warm nights ahead for locals. Keeping their vehicles properly tuned, residents are advised by the TCEQ, will be one step in helping reduce ozone pollution in these conditions, with the National Weather Service underscoring the potential benefits of avoiding drive-through lanes and taking additional measures to keep energy usage at bay during the warmer days ahead.
