Dallas is taking a big step towards mental health awareness this May, joining hands with Harmony Community Development Corporation to shed light on the mental struggles citizens face. In a proclamation reading held on May 8, Dallas City Council Member Zarin Gracey from District 3 stressed the need to talk about mental health issues out in the open, ensuring that support systems are entrenched within the community to bolster resilience and foster inclusivity.
According to the City of Dallas, the event was decked out with personal stories from Harmony CDC's top brass, aiming to crush the stigma around mental health. City officials and local leaders took the stage to hammer home the point, with a poetry slam to boot, all underscoring the city’s commitment to a mental health framework that cares about each person in the community.
"It is imperative that we utilize every available resource to cultivate a mentally healthy community,” Harmony CDC Director Mark Porter conveyed at the event, detailing the stark reality of distress sweeping through neighborhoods – from violence to poverty's clenched fist. "Our mission is to foster a supportive and caring environment where the mental health of every individual is valued. We cannot ignore the distress evident in our community, from instances of violence to the challenges of poverty", as per the City of Dallas.
A recent CertaPet study waved the red flag on the gaping obstacle course uninsured folks face trying to get mental health treatments. Harmony CDC, in response, is opening its doors for free counseling, a boon made possible through city grants, they announced. Plus, they’re bringing in tele-appointments to ensure Dallasites can snag some help without stepping outside their pads.
