A Detroit man is facing serious charges after a fatal hit-and-run that claimed the life of a 65-year-old pedestrian, according to authorities. Savion Jones, 35, pleaded not guilty on Thursday to the charge of failing to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in death. The crash occurred on the evening of May 4 near the intersection of 11 Mile and Hoover Roads in Warren.

The Detroit News reported that Jones allegedly struck the victim with a black 2020 Dodge Ram, then fled without reporting the incident. Warren police and fire departments responded to the scene, discovered the seriously injured man in the roadway, and swiftly transported him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Jones was identified by investigators who found the pickup truck parked in a Shelby Township storage lot, according to the Macomb Daily. The registered owner of the truck was out of state at the time of the crash. Police, through a range of investigative techniques, linked Jones to the incident and arrested him on May 7. Per reports, Jones has a prior felony fraud conviction and was charged as a habitual second offender.

The bond for Jones has been set at $200,000 cash/surety, with a GPS tether required if he manages to post the sum, says WWJ Newsradio. No attorney was listed for Jones in court records as of last Thursday. Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido commented on the case, "A hit-and-run isn't merely an accident; it's a deliberate act of callousness. When a driver chooses to flee instead of rendering aid, they are compounding their guilt with cowardice, leaving behind shattered lives,” Lucido said, per The Detroit News.

Jones is scheduled for his next court appearance on May 23. The untimely tragic incident has resonated throughout the Warren community, raising questions and concerns about road safety and individual responsibility.
