Trash and recycling pickups will be suspended until Tuesday, with subsequent collections experiencing a one-day delay throughout the week.
Memorial Day, a time for reflection on the sacrifices made by military personnel, will also see Detroit Department of Transportation buses running on a reduced Sunday schedule. Free from regular enforcement, parking will give residents and visitors a minor reprieve during the Movement Festival.
While post offices and banks across Michigan are poised to close their doors on this holiday, it's not all quiet. Retailers are seizing the opportunity to attract shoppers with aggressive sales campaigns. But for those looking to run errands or send parcels, it'll have to wait, as the United States Postal Service, alongside FedEx and UPS, will cease operations for the day. WXYZ reports that while most FedEx and UPS services will not be available, FedEx Custom Critical will remain open.
Despite it being a holiday known for its closures, not every door will be locked tight. Mainstays like Walmart, and Target, and grocery chains such as Publix and Whole Foods Market will welcome customers, with some pharmacies like Walgreens and CVS also maintaining operations - though with potentially reduced hours, according to FOX 2 Detroit.
In the state's aim to facilitate the heavy travel expected over the weekend, the Michigan Department of Transportation plans to suspend over half of its roadwork projects, easing some lane restrictions. However, as CBS News Detroit tells us, certain equipment and traffic configurations will still be in place, potentially impacting holiday commutes.
