Dunwoody is gearing up to pay homage to the nation's fallen heroes this Memorial Day, with a ceremony scheduled for May 27 at the DeKalb Veterans Memorial at Brook Run Park, announced the City of Dunwoody Parks and Recreation Department. According to a recent post on the City of Dunwoody official website, the event is set for a 10 a.m. start and will welcome the entire community to join in the remembrance.

Newly minted Police Chief Mike Carlson, who has a military background of his own,, is set to deliver the keynote address. "I always participate in Dunwoody’s Memorial Day Service, and I’m especially honored to serve as the keynote speaker this year," Carlson said in a statement obtained by the City of Dunwoody news bulletin. "This is an important Dunwoody tradition that demonstrates our commitment to honoring those who sacrificed all for their country and our freedom."

Carlson, who ascended to the chief's role of the Dunwoody Police Department on April 12, not only has experience in law enforcement but also wears the accolades of a military veteran. He enlisted in the USMC Reserve in 1994 before retiring as a Captain with the Georgia Army National Guard in 2022, and has been recognized for his service overseas with several commendations, including the Afghanistan Campaign Medal.

The occasion will also feature other local veterans and public servants. Dunwoody City Council Member, Catherine Lautenbacher who clocked four years as an intelligence officer in the U.S. Air Force, will lead the Pledge of Allegiance. Capt. Wayne Radloff, a retired United States Navy officer, will usher in a moment of silence. Meanwhile, the spiritual elements such as the Invocation and Benediction will be delivered by Rev. Kathy Brockman of the Dunwoody United Methodist Church. There will be a musical note as well,, with Dunwoody Idol contestant Grace Jacob set to perform the National Anthem.
