In a heartfelt address to the graduates of Mesa Community College, First Lady Jill Biden urged the newly minted diploma holders to never let naysayers dictate their potential. Biden, drawing from her own life experiences, highlighted the importance of resilience and the relentless pursuit of personal aspirations regardless of external discouragement.
Biden recounted to the graduates how a guidance counselor once deemed her "not college material," advice she chose to defiantly ignore. Instead, she boldly went on to secure not only her college degree but to also earn three additional degrees, including a doctorate in educational leadership at the age of 55, as reported by ABC15.
This journey was accomplished while she was also working full-time and raising three children, as per The Times of India. For over 30 years, Biden has shaped minds as a teacher, currently instructing English and writing at Northern Virginia Community College since 2009. Her speech to the graduates teemed with encouragements to "drown out" doubts and to recall the hardships they surpassed to arrive in their caps and gowns.
"You've met life's challenges before. And you know that on the other side of 'can't' lies the beauty and joy and surprise of life, the adventure that changes us for the better," Biden said. "And you are ready for it," she continued in a statement obtained by The Times of India. Biden expressed that the graduates should remember their strength and tenacity, and never shy away from the unfamiliar.
With a nod to the school spirit, Biden rallied the Class of 2024 with the words, "Let the world feel your thunder!" referencing the college's mascot, the thunderbird, and the school slogan. In a final show of defiance against doubt, Biden left the graduates with a parting shot for the skeptics: "And the next time someone tells you that you 'can't,' you're going to say, 'Oh yeah? Watch me,'" capturing the spirit of ambition and triumph shared by the students on their graduation day.
