From prison to the commencement stage, Clarence Watson's story is one of grit and perseverance. Overcoming a history of incarceration, homelessness, and financial struggles, the 50-year-old Watson is set to graduate with an associate degree in Social Work from Austin Community College (ACC) on May 17, as the college recognizes the achievements of more than 3,000 students at H-E-B Center at Cedar Park, as per ACC.

Watson, whose journey has been highlighted by ACC's Office of College Relations and Marketing, has been lauded by faculty and staff for his extraordinary determination, and, for his drive, that's helped him outstrip the benighted shadows of his past. According to the  Austin Community College's newsroom, Watson shared his sentiments about his upcoming graduation, "I am excited, it’s part of my transformation into becoming my own Superhero."

In a candid reflection on Watson's path, Pamela Fant-Saez, Student Impact & Outcomes Director at ACC, remarked on his resilience, "Despite facing significant challenges, Clarence has persevered and emerged as a pioneering figure within and beyond the ACC community." Watson's outreach efforts include working with the African American Youth Harvest Foundation and Building Promises, a non-profit focused on helping citizens reintegrate post-incarceration.

Perhaps most telling of his dedication, Watson imparts a key piece of advice to those contemplating college, "The first step is the hardest, you don’t have to be Great at the start, but you do have to start to be Great."
