In an effort to reduce the cost and complexity of tax filing for Arizonans, Rep. Ruben Gallego is taking charge of expanding the recently launched Direct File program. According to a press release on Gallego's official website, the Arizona congressman has urged both Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel to consider enhancing the initiative nationwide. Gallego highlighted that Direct File, which enables users to file their taxes free of charge directly with the federal government, has already saved taxpayers millions in fees during its pilot season.
Despite the demonstrated success in Arizona, where over 140,000 users were reportedly able to claim in excess of $90 million in refunds, the congressman voiced concerns regarding challenges for those taxpayers also dealing with state income taxes. Gallego has queried the IRS on its plans to "simplify direct filing options in areas with state income tax" and the resources needed to widely adopt Direct File across the U.S. Additionally, he addressed the potential hurdles of increased demand for the service and how Congress can pitch in to ensure a smoother tax filing season.
The congressman's letter, full text of which can be found on his website, raises pertinent questions about enhancing the tax filing experience. Gallego asked, "What have been the greatest unforeseen challenges with the initial pilot program?" indicating a search for improvement areas. Furthermore, he is seeking clarity on the key issues consumers have flagged, looking to prioritize resolutions before the next rush of tax filings.
The IRS and Treasury Department have yet to publicly respond to Gallego's inquiries. However, the issue at hand is bound to attract significant attention, given the implications for American taxpayers. The desire to make filing simpler and less costly is a notable drive from Gallego as people continue to navigate the often-dreaded tax season. With an increase in support and resources, Direct File has the ability to potentially revolutionize the tax system for millions, lifting the burden of additional charges and the labyrinth of paperwork many currently face.
