In a tangible nod to nearly three decades of mentorship through athletics, retired Garland Lieutenant Dave Swavey has been honored with the Garland Sports Hall of Fame's Homer B. Johnson Legacy Award. Swavey, who served the Garland community, found his post-police calling in the noble task of steering young minds towards brighter futures, whipping up a recipe of discipline and camaraderie within the walls of the Garland Police Boxing Gym.
Swavey's Haven for Youth, operational since 1995, is touted as the nation's largest of its kind—a testament to his commitment to shaping lives, and it's this unwavering dedication that has kept thousands of young aspiring athletes tethered to the dreams of legitimate success rather than the empty promises of street life.
The accolade, as shared by the Garland Police Department on Facebook, notes that "The Garland Sports Hall of Fame seeks a legacy to celebrate each year," and they found such in the relentless toil of Lt. Dave Swavey, whose vision transcends the sport itself becoming a conduit for social change, embodying the spirit intended for the Homer B. Johnson Legacy Award.
It's this deeply-rooted belief in sports as a catalyst for community upliftment that has not only garnered Swavey the recognition, but also the respect of an entire town who have witnessed the fruits of his labor—they've seen their kids trade potential court dates for graduation dates, and that singular transformation is a story written in the sweat on the gym's floor, a story that exalts the power of giving over receiving, prompting the Garland Sports Hall of Fame's salute to a true champion of the people.
