The Gwinnett County Police Department has announced the retirement of K-9 Jekel, a valued member of its force, after nearly six years of diligent service due to a medical issue with his leg. FOX 5 Atlanta reports that Jekel, who commenced his service in 2018, will now enjoy his retirement years in the care of his handler, Corporal Jason Woodard.
Jekel's tenure was marked by a series of significant achievements in the field, being a key player in various high-profile cases, contributing to the arrest of 51 individuals and making 36 narcotics busts and not to forget, the locating of several missing persons, his health issue first noticed by Cpl. Woodard in late 2023, prompting medical intervention and finally leading to his retirement after a surgery. According to 11Alive, the department has praised Jekel's role in making the community a safer environment for work, play, and life.
Throughout his career, the canine cop has been deployed some 299 times, aiding in the recovery of a vast array of narcotics, this including a haul of more than 5,000 grams of methamphetamine back in 2018 and substantial quantities of methamphetamine and fentanyl in subsequent years. These accomplishments have markedly underscored his significant contribution to law enforcement efficacy in the country.
