
A tragic crash on 16th Street NW ended in the death of a young woman Saturday night, Metropolitan Police confirmed. In the incident occurring shortly before 10:30 p.m., a high-speed Subaru attempted to quickly overtake a BMW, leading to the Subaru hitting a tree and the passenger suffering fatal injuries.
The vehicle, which had been moving at an accelerated rate, struck the BMW, lost control, and then rammed into a nearby tree. This crash, reported by the Metropolitan Police Department's Major Crash Investigations Unit, claimed the life of the passenger, identified as Jessica Luna Sanchez, 24, from Northwest. Sanchez was pronounced dead at the scene after emergency personnel failed to revive her.
The driver of the Subaru, whose identity was not disclosed, sustained injuries that were reported to be non-life threatening and was transported to a local area hospital. The occupants of the BMW involved in the incident escaped unharmed, adding another layer to the tragedy that unfolded on an otherwise quiet street.
Officials continue to look closely into the chain of events that led up to the crash, scrutinizing the high-speed maneuver that set off the series of unfortunate outcomes. The driver's state of being at the time of the crash and other contributing factors remain under investigation. The MPD has not released any additional information about potential charges at this time.
