Hyundai owners are getting a leg up in the fight against car theft with a free anti-theft software upgrade now available, following a viral TikTok trend that exposed a vulnerability in certain models. According to a KENS5 report, Hyundai's new software package targets 2011 - 2021 models that start with a key turn, and comes with a free clinic for installation in San Antonio.
David Vandelinde, Hyundai Motor America's vice president, stated the upgrade is completed using a "Vehicle Communication Interface" (VCI) device that takes only about 15-20 minutes to install beneath the steering wheel. "So it needs to see the key turning," Vandelinde explained, "but it also needs to see the electronic signal from the fob." This initiative, also backed by San Antonio Police Chief William McManus, is expected to thwart thefts linked to the previous online advice on how to steal these cars.
The car manufacturer is not only offering the tech fix but also providing physical anti-theft devices. Owners attending the upgrade clinic, set at Gustafson Stadium until June 2, and on June 2 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., will receive free steering wheel locks—a tool Vandelinde endorsed for additional security in dangerous locales.
Following suit, the Austin Police Department (APD) is collaborating with Hyundai on a similar event up north. Reported by FOX7Austin, a clinic will run tomorrow, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at APD's location on 1520 Rutherford Lane, where no appointment is necessary for the software install, which should wrap in under 30 minutes. Drivers can swing by with no need for registrations ahead of the event.
Such proactive measures aim to curb the vehicle theft statistics that have peaked in the wake of the now-infamous social media trend, potentially offering peace of mind to vehicle owners. "Any thief that walks up to the car, can see that they’re wasting their time," Vandelinde said, highlighting the benefits of the new anti-theft stickers also being distributed. For Hyundai owners seeking additional information or to determine if their vehicle qualifies for the update, a serial number can be entered through the company's designated online portal.
