A new sandwich shop on San Antonio's West Side is turning heads with oversized, house-baked bread stuffed with quality Italian cold cuts. West Hill Subs & Deli opened at 3004 W. Martin St. in the historic Prospect Hill neighborhood, and it's already being promoted as a hidden gem in the barrio.
The shop's signature offering is what it calls the West Round Italian Sandwich, built on a 9-inch round Italian bread baked fresh in-house every day, according to the deli's Facebook page. That daily-baked round isn't the only thing coming out of the oven — the deli also uses a long-fermentation process to produce house-made hero bread, semolina rolls, brioche, and burger buns that go into its subs, pastrami, cheesesteaks, and burgers, per the shop's own social media posts.
Ginormous Rolls Anchor the Menu
West Hill Subs & Deli markets its ginormous rolls and quality Italian cold cuts as the backbone of its menu, aiming to draw customers in with the sheer size of its bread as much as what's stacked inside it. The shop was recently featured on KABB's Keepin' It Puro segment, which hosts Ryan Wolf and Alex Garcia use to spotlight local, family-owned restaurants and neighborhood hidden gems around San Antonio, according to MySA.
As part of that coverage, customers who mention Fox SA's Keepin' It Puro segment at West Hill Subs & Deli on Friday can get a free drink and chips with any sandwich order. It's a familiar move for the segment, which regularly coordinates short-term discounts or free add-ons with featured San Antonio dining spots — including past promotions at Brenda's Burgers, FatHead Pizza, and Pizza Classics, as shown in footage posted to YouTube.
A Storefront With a Sandwich Legacy
The building at 3004 W. Martin St. has a bit of sandwich history of its own. It previously housed Birotes Tortas Ahogadas, a West Side spot known for Guadalajara-style drowned pork sandwiches served on house-baked birote rolls, MySA reported in October 2024. Like its predecessor, West Hill Subs & Deli is leaning on scratch-baked bread as its calling card in the same location.
The deli sits within Prospect Hill, an early 20th-century West Side community that grew into a cultural hub anchored by independent, family-owned small businesses, according to the San Antonio Report. That neighborhood identity fits with how West Hill Subs & Deli is being promoted — not as a chain outlet, but as a hidden gem woven into the barrio's fabric.
Ties to an Established South Side Restaurant
West Hill Subs & Deli isn't a standalone startup. It operates as a sister concept to La Unica, an Italian eatery on Goliad Road on San Antonio's South/Southeast Side, according to the deli's Facebook page. The team behind the deli had previously tested Italian dishes and sandwiches within La Unica's existing restaurant setup before branching out with the West Martin Street storefront.
Since August 24, West Hill Subs & Deli has kept regular hours Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., staying closed on Sundays, per the business's own Facebook updates. The new schedule followed what the shop described as its initial summer soft-opening phase.
Part of a Citywide Sandwich Boom
West Hill Subs & Deli's arrival fits into a broader wave of independent, artisan-focused sandwich shops expanding across San Antonio in 2026. Leon Valley's Wicked Wich opened on Bandera Road in February, and chef Stefan Bowers launched the Mayday pop-up in April, as Hoodline has reported.
San Antonio has a history with oversized, house-baked Italian sandwiches, too. Zito's Deli, established in 1974, built its reputation on the massive Serious Sandwich served on homemade Italian flatbread, according to San Antonio Magazine. West Hill Subs & Deli's daily-baked round loaf and ginormous rolls suggest the West Side's newest deli is aiming to carve out its own place in that same tradition.
