In a game that was too close for comfort, Jewell Loyd dominated the hardwood with 32 points to drive the Seattle Storm to a narrow 85-83 victory over the Indiana Fever on Wednesday night. Loyd's stellar performance, including 21 points in the first half, was a much-needed spark for the team as they struggled early in the season. As KOMO News reported, the victory helped the Storm improve their record to 2-3, while keeping the Fever winless at 0-5.
Loyd was not alone in her efforts; Storm teammate Sami Whitcomb stepped up majorly, scoring all 10 of her points during the fourth quarter to help to maintain the lead. Despite being pushed to the limit, the Storm showed resilience as they withstood a formidable challenge from Fever rookie Caitlin Clark. As per FOX 13 Seattle, Clark's efforts included scoreless opening quarter and a quick turnaround to lead a third-quarter rally, ultimately finishing with 21 points.
The tension peaked in the final seconds, where a fumbled inbound pass by Clark led to a jump ball, and the Storm clung on to a razor-thin lead. Seattle's defensive prowess on full display, credited largely to Skylar Diggins-Smith's handling of Clark. "Regardless who we play, we really rely on our defense pressuring the point guards," Loyd said, according to FOX 13 Seattle. "That's something that Skylar brings and that's what she wants to do, and we rallied behind that."
Meanwhile, Seattle's own Nika Muhl made her long-awaited rookie debut after missing the first four games due to visa issues, entering to a warm reception from the fans. Despite this, it was Clark who provided a momentary spark, sinking a 3-pointer over Muhl, ESPN reported. However, restless fans at the Climate Pledge Arena witnessed their team hang on to emerge victorious amidst Clark's impressive efforts, which included a mix of 6 for 16 shooting and a baseline drive that marked her first points in the second quarter.
With this game, Loyd records her 22nd career 30-point game and provides a glimmer of hope to reboot the Storm's championship aspirations. On the other side, Clark and the Fever are left to regroup and seek their elusive first win of the season.
