The quaint city of Kyle, Texas, is ready to launch another bid to secure a spot in the record books. This Saturday, the annual "Gathering of the Kyles" will seek to smash the current Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people sharing the same first name, as participants named Kyle descend on the town, according to a recent report by KUT.org.
Kyle, situated between Austin and San Marcos, will see its fifth iteration of the unique festivity, first launched in 2017 and resuming strong last year after a brief hiatus as per the Houston Chronicle. In the 2023 Gathering, 1,490 Kyles from 49 states gathered, but the record, set by 2,325 Ivans in Bosnia and Herzegovina back in 2017, remained unbroken.
“Last year, we were blown away by the number of Kyles who showed up in honor of their namesake. Nearly 1,500 Kyles answered the call, but we need even more Kyles to break the record in 2024,” said Claudia Rocha, Kyle Fair special events manager, in a statement obtained by the Houston Chronicle. The event is set to feature an official Guinness World Record count, a carnival, live music, and some savory Texan cook-offs.
One particular Kyle, Kyle Lawrence, is making the trek from Los Angeles to join fellow Kyles in what he anticipated to be a diverse conglomeration. "What better excuse to meet other people with the best first name in the world," Lawrence told KUT.org. Punching drywall, an activity rooted in a viral comedic stereotype about people named Kyle, will even make an appearance as a festival event, highlighting the city's tongue-in-cheek embrace of the meme.
International Kyles also contributed to these numbers, with attendees from countries as far as Australia and Germany participating last year. The event, as noted by the city’s communications director Rachel Sonnier in an interview with KUT.org, brings more than just an attempt at record-breaking. "They're a fun group of people, a good time," said Sonnier, emphasizing the positive impact on local businesses as Kyles, accompanied by friends and family, populates the town.
Hopeful Kyles must register by 12:30 p.m. to be counted in the official tally, with the final count commencing at 1 p.m. at the Kyle Arena. And as the countdown to this whimsical assembly ticks ever closer, one message resonates: Come one, come 2,326, or even more, to Kyle, Texas, this weekend.
