San Antonio's major highway intersection at Loop 1604 and Interstate 10 is gearing up for a significant shutdown this weekend. Starting from 9 p.m. Friday until the weehours of Monday at 5 a.m., several lanes on both highways will be closed. The reason for the headache? Crews are setting steel beams at the interchange, a pivotal phase of the Loop 1604 North Expansion project initiated by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), as San Antonio Report detailed.
Since construction kicked off in 2021, aiming to transform and widen the existing roadway by 2027, San Antonio drivers have been all too familiar with the near-weekly closures and ensuing traffic nightmares. TxDOT's latest announcement confirms the upcoming disruption will affect Loop 1604 in both directions, spanning from La Cantera Parkway to Stone Oak Parkway, and the main lanes of I-10 through the interchange area.
All four cloverleaf ramps at the notorious interchange are set to be closed, along with the frontage roads through the configuration. Additional closures include a complete shutdown of Northwest Military Highway under Loop 1604, beginning Friday night and lasting until early Saturday morning. During this period, TxDOT will also close the left lane of the Loop 1604 eastbound frontage road stretching from Lockhill Selma Road to Northwest Military Highway.
Police officers are scheduled to direct traffic at the intersections throughout the closures, ensuring some measure of control over the potential chaos. For those unable to avoid the area, TxDOT advices staying put at home or delaying travel until Saturday evening, when it's expected that a portion of Loop 1604 will reopen with a newly added lane, as per San Antonio Report.
Alternate routes have been announced for travelers: For outbound San Antonio traffic, exits and frontage roads offer detours around the shutdown. Eastbound Loop 1604 drivers can use the Vance Jackson Road exit to reenter the loop at Blanco Road, while westbound traffic will exit at Blanco Road, taking a detour via the frontage road to Loop 1604's westbound frontage after Valero Way. In a spot of reprieve, no major closures are set for the Memorial Day weekend.
