Tragedy struck in Oceana County, Michigan, as a standoff between a man alleged to have an explosive device and law enforcement ended fatally. Michigan State Police confirmed a 44-year-old local man was shot and killed by a first responder after he threatened to "kill everyone," reported WZZM 13. The incident began on Saturday afternoon and came to a head around 7:45 P.M. when the man, who had earlier fled into the woods, emerged with a wired device and issued his threats.
The situation unfolded on Scales Road in Muskegon County after troopers were initially dispatched to a report of the individual acting erratically. Following the confrontation, areas surrounding Nichols and Skeels Road were cordoned off and residents evacuated while law enforcement engaged with the suspect. A member of the Michigan State Police Emergency Support Team fatally shot the man after a "perceived threat," according to a statement obtained by WOOD TV.
Witnesses recounted a tense scene as the area was swarmed by police activity. "He made the statement he was going to kill everyone," MSP Lt. Michelle Robinson described, in a recount obtained by WOOD TV. State Police had the Michigan State Police Bomb Squad on the scene, as negotiations stretched over several hours.
An investigation is now underway by Michigan State Police’s 5th District Special Investigative Section to unravel the details of the encounter and determine the validity of the bomb threat. As of now, state police have yet to confirm whether the device presented by the man was indeed an operational bomb.
