A gruesome tale of deception and murder has concluded with a life sentence for Ocastor Shavon Ferguson, 35, who killed his girlfriend and hid her body. The verdict was handed down in McKinney, Texas, where District Attorney Greg Willis's office successfully prosecuted the case. Ferguson, a married Jamaican national, was living a double life when he murdered Kayla Kelley, with whom he maintained an extramarital affair under the alias "Kevin Brown."
According to the Collin County District Attorney's Office, Kelley's charred vehicle was first discovered by Frisco Police on January 12, 2023. Swift's investigative work linked the car to Kelley, leading detectives and the Texas Rangers to uncover a web of lies spun by Ferguson. Detectives recovered revealing cell phone communications, and despite Ferguson's initial feigning of concern for Kelley's disappearance, authorities uncovered evidence of multiple infidelities, including the relationship with Kelley herself.
Extensive digital footprints, including cell phone and Lyft records, placed Ferguson at the scene of the crime. Video footage also captured him stealing a gas can and purchasing a lighter, tools that would later be used to torch Kelley's vehicle. A key piece of evidence came from Kelley's last known communication—messages sent from Ferguson's phone to his other girlfriends exposing his double life, on the night she vanished.
Ferguson's convoluted tales unraveled as investigators pinpointed her final resting place—a shallow grave not far from Ferguson's home. The medical examiner determined asphyxiation as the cause of death, solidifying the case against him. During the trial, "Ferguson lied constantly, from the investigation to his sentencing testimony. But this jury saw through it all and gave him the life sentence he deserved," Willis pointed out after the sentencing, according to the Collin County District Attorney's Office.
Ferguson's haphazard defense claimed he was kidnapped on the day Kelley disappeared, a story he had not mentioned during the initial investigation. However, the jury did not buy his story and handed Ferguson a life sentence for the murder of Kayla Kelley. This verdict is the culmination of diligent work by the prosecutorial team and law enforcement officers, ensuring justice was served in a case that shook the community.
