Ward 7's tail-wagging residents just got their day in the sun as Mayor Muriel Bowser, and city officials opened the first dog park East of the River — a space for pups to roam free in the Texas Avenue Dog Park. The ribbon-cutting ceremony hailed the arrival of the much-anticipated amenity, featuring separate play areas for small and large dogs.

"Residents in every part of DC have pets, and they need safe spaces for their dogs to play and exercise," said Mayor Bowser at the event, according to an announcement by DC.gov. Acknowledging the need for equitable pet facilities across the city, the park not only caters to canine exercise but also offers grills for public use, seating, and shade structures — a community hub for those on two feet or four. And with the city's 2025 budget, Ward 7 can expect even more enhancements, with plans for a new aquatic center, ice arena, and sports complex.

The Department of General Services (DGS) Director Delano Hunter was quoted in the release saying, "With over 330 active capital projects underway, our agency remains steadfast in our mission to enhance the infrastructure that shapes the fabric of our nation's capital," according to DC.gov. DGS prides itself on nurturing the city's landscape, and Texas Avenue Dog Park is its latest success, embodying a mission of serving the community’s varied needs.

The park's construction also represents a win for local businesses, as 62% of the project was awarded to local certified business enterprises (CBEs), funneling nearly $600,000 back into the area's economy. Mayor Bowser's administration continues to make strides in supporting neighborhood businesses, thereby exceeding its goal of 35% CBE participation. Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) Director Thennie Freeman also shared personal excitement about the new facility, saying, "As a dog parent in Ward 7, I look forward sharing this amenity with my puppy, Macksi, and neighbors," as stated by DC.gov.

Dog owners and their furry companions are now welcome to enjoy the new Texas Avenue Dog Park, marking a pivotal step toward the city's drive toward more inclusive, accessible public spaces. Between local economic boosts and promoting community interaction, the park stands as a testament to progress in both urban development and social spaces for residents and their pets alike.
