A fatal fire in Mesa has left one man dead, with his identity confirmed as 57-year-old Richard Daniels. The blaze tore through a home near Gilbert Road and 8th Avenue last Tuesday, with the firefight commencing around 5:30 p.m. Despite efforts to curb its wrath, officials reported a resident was missing during the burning, according to FOX 10 Phoenix.
Recovered amidst the ashes after the flames subsided, Daniels' body discovery was confirmed earlier today by Mesa Police. Investigators from both the fire department and the police are still sifting through debris and clues, seeking to pin down the precise cause of the fire and the manner of Daniels' untimely death. "The origin and cause of the fire is still under investigation," Det. Brandi Myers told 12News.
Mourning the loss, Amy Perille, the victim's former girlfriend recalled Daniels as a man with unfading dreams of rock stardom, harboring ambition alongside a collection of big TVs and movie box sets in a home occupied by him alone. "It was 80s metal guy, still was trying to be in a band and make it big," Perille said, as reported by FOX 10 Phoenix.
The neighborhood echoes with the sorrow of a life extinguished too soon. Robert Tanner, a neighbor, recounted the event for FOX 10 Phoenix, saying, "The flames, but mostly just lots and lots of smoke, probably went up roughly higher, but it’s roughly the height of the pole there". Perille, dealing with a loss reminiscent of tragedies past, described a profound sense of guilt. "I lost another boyfriend about 10 years ago to cirrhosis, so I kind of feel like a black widow and also kind of blame it myself because he lived in California, and he moved out here for me, so if I didn’t meet him, he might still be alive," she disclosed to FOX 10 Phoenix.
Daniels was found in the bed in the master bedroom. As family and friends mourn, the Mesa community awaits answers as the investigation into the fatal blaze continues.
