The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has seen the graduation of its third cohort from the DC Police Leadership Academy (DCPLA) which focuses on honing the leadership skills necessary for modern policing challenges. The graduation ceremony, which was reported by MPDC, celebrated the completion of the program by 17 law enforcement officials, including Captains and Lieutenants, who have been training to shape the future of policing with innovative and creative strategies.

The intensive three-week DCPLA program, split into two sessions, saw participation from 72 members across the U.S. and the globe. Engaged in interactive activities and discourse, the graduates were involved in community building that focused on increasing adaptability, creativity, and motivation in the leadership within their respective law enforcement agencies. According to a statement obtained by MPDC, “DCPA continues to provide an environment where our leaders are collaborating to exchange ideas and share effective strategies to empower our leaders for success,” declared Chief of Police Pamela A. Smith. She underscored the importance of their leadership evolution for the future of policing globally.

With a strong emphasis on integrity, trust, humility, and respect, the DCPLA is situated at a pivotal moment in law enforcement history, where the need for empathetic and effective leaders is critical. Launched in 2022, the academy targets mid-level leaders, focusing on developing a mindset of growth and learning the necessary management approaches to support and guide their teams.

The course curriculum is designed to arm these second line supervisors with the essential tools and insights to lead with confidence and inspire innovation in their agencies. “Their graduation marks the culmination of an outstanding group of members who’ve focused on the future of policing, both within our ranks and throughout the global law enforcement community, to take policing to the next level,” Chief Smith told MPDC in a poignant summary of the program's benefits and accomplishments.
