In a nod to progress in workplace equality, Senator Sandy Pappas and a host of advocates and officials recently commemorated the 10-year mark of the Women’s Economic Security Act (WESA). At a celebratory event, key voices in the fight for gender justice highlighted the strides made since WESA's enactment in Minnesota. Speaking at the Minnesota Senate Building, Senator Pappas heralded the act's impact, proclaiming, "In those 10 years, WESA has protected countless women from discrimination in the workplace and provided innumerable opportunities for their career advancement," as reported by Senate DFL.
The celebrations, unfolding on the morning of May 13th, served to not only reflect on WESA's past but also to reveal recent enhancements to the act. Senator Pappas was able to finally usher through the "Earned Sick and Safe Time and the Secure Choice Retirement Program," with the recent session's approval. These changes aim to holistically benefit Minnesota's labor force. "After a decade of advocacy, our persistence and patience paid off," Senator Pappas told attendees in the packed event space, her words weighted with the gravity of long-fought victories.
New adjustments to WESA in 2023 cover a range of protections, from ensuring lactating workers get paid breaks to express milk irrespective of their child's age, to mandating private and secure lactation spaces at work. Additionally, regardless of the business size, employees are now guaranteed pregnancy accommodations and unpaid parental leave. These updates are critical to bolstering a more inclusive and supportive work environment for all genders but particularly aim to dismantle barriers for women in the labor market.
Communicating these rights has also been beefed up under the revisited WESA provisions. Workers must be notified of their rights regarding pregnancy and lactation when they are hired, inquire about or request parental leave, and also this information is detailed in available worker handbooks. These steps are measures intended to ensure every worker is both aware and able to fully utilize the protections WESA affords.
