In a move to fortify the state against the scourge of violent crime, the newly minted Violent Crime Reduction Unit (VCRU) in Minnesota is taking to the streets. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) has upped the ante in the combat against violence through this specialized squad, focused on strategic intervention and collaboration with local law enforcement. Officially rolling out at the start of 2024, the VCRU puts a fresh spin on an antecedent program, the Violent Crime Reduction Support Initiative (VCRSI), set in motion back in April 2022.
BCA's previous foray into targeted crime reduction commenced at a time when Minnesota's local partners were grappling with rising violent crime rates coupled with a squeeze in staffing. This initiative saw them making impeccable strides by arresting repeat offenders, seizing firearms, and taking drugs off the streets. From its inception until December 2023, the team's efforts reaped 1,384 arrests and the seizure of 653 firearms, among other significant confiscations, as reported on the department's news release. The apparent success of these endeavors caught lawmakers' attention, prompting an injection of funds to establish the new VCRU, gearing it with far greater capabilities and reach.
The reinforcements have arrived—not just in manpower, with 14 BCA agents, but also in the form of a firearms detection K-9, two criminal intelligence analysts, two crime victim/witness coordinators, and 11 task force officers drawn from a dozen local partner agencies. BCA Superintendent Drew Evans underscored the significance of a united front in this crusade, stating, "We know that crime does not respect jurisdictional boundaries. That's why it's so important we work with our partners in this holistic approach to reducing violent crime." He also highlighted the unit's swift impact since January 2024, with 112 wanted criminals arrested and a further cache of illegal firepower and drugs intercepted.
Allegiances in this initiative span across various law enforcement divisions, with valuable contributions from the sheriff's offices of Ramsey and Anoka counties, alongside the Fridley, St. Louis Park, Columbia Heights, Crystal, Bloomington, Brooklyn Park, Maplewood, North St. Paul, Roseville, and Robbinsdale police departments. "We are grateful to our local partners for their willingness to tackle this issue with us and look forward to seeing the continued success this unit will achieve," Evans told the department's news release. The VCRU's centralized base is currently being outfitted to serve as a launchpad for swift and efficient response across the Twin Cities Metro Area and further afield, showcasing Minnesota's commitment to public safety.
