Monroe County officials have issued a boil water advisory after a suspected major line break caused widespread water pressure dips, raising concerns over potential bacterial contamination. Residents have been instructed to boil water before using it for drinking or food prep and to strain it through a clean cloth beforehand, as reported by WVLT. Monroe County Schools responded to the crisis, including bottled water in the lunch menus for Tellico Plains High School, Elementary School, and Junior High School.
The situation improved as Tellico Plains officials announced the repair of the major line break that had initiated the boil water notice. Most areas have since lifted their advisory, but it remains for those along Highway 360 and in the Ballplay area, with expectations for it to be cleared by Saturday morning, according to WATE. The water problem, fixed by overworked town employees, who were thanked in a social media post after 36+ hours of continuous effort, is something that the customer of Tellico Water cannot control.
Further updates from the town indicated the advisory resulted from a large line break first reported on Thursday when residents experienced outages along the downtown area and Mecca Pike. "Due to a suspected large line break, water pressure in areas of Tellico Plains system have decreased below minimum standards," Tellico Plains alerted via Facebook post as detailed by WBIR. The authorities explicitly outlined the steps to ensure water safety through boiling.
As part of their contingency plan, Monroe County Schools adjusted their menus to include prepackaged items and foods that don't require water, ensuring that children remained nourished and hydrated without the need for potentially contaminated tap water. "Bottled water have been provided for drinking," they statedvia WBIR, showing dedication to student well-being amid the infrastructure crisis.
