San Antonio's District 6 has spiced up its infrastructure with the recent inauguration of a new city facility and a trailhead, aiming to amplify community engagement and outdoor activity. Councilmember Melissa Cabello Havrda led the launch on May 18, witnessed by locals and political veterans, including previous District 6 Councilmembers who have been instrumental to the project's fruition. The new Tezel Road City Facility & Trailhead is not just another office; it's pegged as a nexus for the District 6 staff to effectively respond to constituent concerns and as a venue for public events.
The 6644 Tezel Rd address has sprouted more than just an office—it includes a 1.8-mile trail designed for walking and biking, linked to the larger Howard Peak Greenway Trails System. With celebrations in check, the new trail promises, residents a dose of San Antonio's verdant corners. Adding a touch of artistry to the place is "Bloom", a public art investing by local artist Leticia Huerta, which also graces the new trailhead. "We’re thrilled this day has finally come," Havrda said in a statement. "This field office has been a long time in the making and we’ve overcome many hurdles - the pandemic, supply chain issues, and rising costs." It was a team effort, with officials past and present, including State Senator Jose Menendez; State Representative Ray Lopez; ex-Councilmember Greg Brockhouse; the Public Works Department, and the Parks and Recreation Department, all of whom were name-checked by Havrda for their persistence.
Among the constellation of politicos and departments that steered this ambitious project to its end, State Representative Ray Lopez was highlighted for securing the much-needed land and funding in his past role on the City Council. This strategic kickoff has set the stage potentially for an enhanced community experience in District 6. Reinforcing the civic promise, Havrda added, "One of my top priorities for this project was to make sure it included a space for community gatherings, and to ensure that it improves the lives of everyone in this community and this city."
