Drivers in Norristown and parts of East Norriton Township better brace for nighttime delays as PennDOT gears up to mill and pave a stretch of U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike) under a hefty $55.2 million revamp. You'll need to tack on some extra minutes if you're planning to roll through from Johnson Highway to Swede Road, with closures kicking in at 7 PM and not opening up again until the roosters crow at 6 AM, starting Monday, May 20, through Friday, May 24. Be ready to stop on a dime as traffic grinds intermittently to a halt between Johnson Highway and Township Line Road, as reported by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
According to PennDOT, the project seeks to totally transform and broaden the now two-lane Dekalb Pike. We're talking a new layout here, with two lanes heading north, one south, and a dedicated center turn lane for those in between swerves from Johnson Highway to Township Line Road. Plus, fitness buffs and eco-warriors alike can look forward to new five-foot-wide bike paths that'll run alongside the whole area under construction.
PennDOT is planning to bring its whole toolkit to this party, upgrading the drainage system and bringing in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) to smooth out the ebb and flow of traffic. It's all part of a big-league, multi-phase offensive to bulldoze through and beef up a 9.1-mile expanse of U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike), plus give a serious makeover to select crossroads spanning from Johnson Highway in Norristown to Route 309 in Montgomery Township.
