Heavy machinery and orange cones have become a familiar sight on U.S. 1 in Chester County, as PennDOT soldiers on with its $10.4 million improvement project. Daily commuters through Kennett and East Marlborough townships should brace themselves for more disruption—travel restrictions are kicking in soon, and it's bound to cause a few headaches.
The grind continues starting May 14 when northbound traffic on Baltimore Pike will face lane closures between Greenwood Road and Orchard Avenue, weekdays from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, PennDOT announced. Through to June 3, motorists will want to budget extra time, because if there's one certainty, it's delays, long waits, and the collective sigh of the rush hour crowd.
This roadwork isn't just for show—by the end of it, U.S. 1 will boast new lanes, shinier surfaces, and a layout built for the future. Pedestrians will get a piece of the action too, with sidewalks running from Schoolhouse Road to Longwood Village Shopping Center. It's PennDOT's promise of a smoother journey, and the removal of the left turn from Orchard Avenue should keep things ticking along nicely.
