In a display of quick thinking and bravery, three men were awarded the Life-Saving Award by the Peoria Fire-Medical Department for rescuing a man from a burning vehicle following a crash earlier this month. Among the heroes was Goodyear Police Detective Erickson, honored alongside civilians Johnny Isordia and Matthew Arizmendez for their lifesaving actions on May 9. As reported by the Goodyear Police Department, the trio intervened after a vehicle accident resulted in a fire, risking their lives to save another.
The incident unfolded after Detective Erickson, just off-duty, and the two men, who had finished their dinner, noticed the smoking wreck; Erickson alongside Isordia and Arizmendez without hesitation busted open the vehicle's window and extracted the trapped man before the flames could engulf the car, according to the Goodyear Police Department's announcement. The detective modestly hailed his civilian counterparts as "the true heroes," a sentiment that mirrors the profound yet often unspoken understanding that heroism is not solely the province of badge-bearing.
Isordia, reflecting on the gravity of the situation and they sprung into action, told reporters, "We knew we had to get him out as quickly as possible," a testament to the decisive action that underlines such tales of valor where every ticking second can mean the difference between life and death. Their award presentation, replete with official commendations, is available for viewing on the Goodyear Police Department's YouTube Channel, inviting the public to witness the honor bestowed upon ordinary citizens and officers alike.
